The Form,Characteristics and Structure of Disease Narrative in the Novels of the Late Qing Dynasty

Abstract: Disease narrative is an emblematic expression of the concerns of the novelists in the late Qing DynastyThey focused on the treatment of diseasesfor the propaganda of healing effectscontemplating various problems that occurred after the healingand showed a variety of thematic formsThis genre of novel employed the modern vision of disease discoveryto link diseases with the national reform; it showed an apparent modernistic character with a future consciousness ofdisease will eventually be cured. The narratives based on diagnosis and treatment and the thinking dimension of people being treated had emphasized the role of doctor while neglecting patients experience and it arrived at a cognitive pattern ofdoctor-patient. This kind of novel had broken through theleisure and entertaining writing-orientation of the traditional novelThe modern themes it awaken to the people had also influenced the novel creation of realistic criticism in later generations
