On July 8th, 2018, hosted by the School of Public Administration of Sichuan University, the 2018 International Symposium on "Governance and Innovation at Local Level" was held in Chengdu. Li Xufeng, deputy secretary of the Sichuan University committee of CPC, Xu Xiaodong, vice president of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Professor Chen Jing’an, vice president of the Chinese Political Society, Tong Xing, vice president of the Chinese Society for social security, Professor Martin Jones from Nottingham Trent University in UK, and nearly 100 experts and scholars from San Antonio, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Toronto in Canada, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Xiamen University, and other well-known domestic journals and magazines participate into the symposium.
Professor Li Xufeng welcomed the distinguished experts and scholars attending the forum, and he pointed out that local governance is the basic unit of national governance and global governance. With the rapid development and change of economic, social and political environment, many new theoretical frameworks, research paradigms and practical experiences have emerged in the field of local governance and public policy research. It is a duty of public management to explain the new theories and new practices, to track the development trend of global local governance innovation, to respond to the challenges faced by the current local governance practice, and to improve the quality of the research on local governance innovation.
Professor Chen Jing’an said that it is not only the best time for local governance and innovation, but also the most difficult time for local governance and innovation. It not only needs the courage and wisdom of the local practice workers, but also needs the theoretical support of the researchers. We hope that the experts and scholars work together to promote the innovation of local governance and make due contribution to the realization of the national governance system and modernization of governance capacity.
Professor Tong Xing from Nanjing University, Professor Ding Huang of Wuhan University, Professor Weili Teng from Nottingham Trent University, Professor Fan Bo from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, focused on the "the new trend of emergency management", "urban management and urban governance", "local governance and innovation under the context of national governance", "Sustainable Futures: Thinking about local governance rather than local government "," promotion for the "Internet + government service" and other topics of government capabilities to share the insights of their own research and strategic suggestions.
In the context of deepening the reform and opening up to the outside world, in order to speed up the cooperation and exchange of scientific research in the "local governance" academic field between China and the UK, the school of public administration, SCU and Nottingham Trent University jointly hold a series of symposium on "the innovation and governance at local level in China and Britain". The first symposium was held in Nottingham Trent University in July 2017. According to the cooperation mechanism, the symposium will be hosted by the two sides in turn.
